Of all the Aloe species, Aloe vera is the most beneficial plant. Making your own Aloe vera juice will ensure that there are no unhealthy additives or preservatives added.
Things to note before you make Aloe vera juice:
1. The plant must be mature enough to provide fullest Aloe vera juice benefits, so choose a plant of 3 to 4 years of age.
2. The inner part of the Aloe vera leaf called the Aloe gel is used to make Aloe vera juice and it is important to know that the Aloe vera gel oxidizes rapidly. Oxidation breaks large number of nutrients and beneficial compounds present in Aloe vera gel. So, how do we know if the Aloe vera gel is oxidized? Simple, oxidized Aloe vera gel will turn into brown in color.
3. When a leaf is harvested from the Aloe vera plant, immediately remove the rind. There will be a yellow layer called aloin just under the rind and it is very important to remove this yellow layer as you remove the rind. The yellow latex-type layer can also be removed by rinsing the rind removed leaf in a solution containing one tablespoon vinegar and one cup water.
Important Note: The yellow layer or aloin will cause diarrhea and cramping if ingested, so be very careful.
Follow these simple steps to make Aloe vera juice at home:
1. Harvest a leaf from the Aloe vera plant. Using a knife, trim off the thorny edges of the leaf and rinse the leaf.
2. Now, split open the Aloe leaf in to two and using a spoon scoop the inner layer called gel. The gel appears to be clear and translucent.
3. Put the Aloe vera gel in a blender to make juice. The Aloe vera juice is bitter in taste, so to make it potable you can add orange or grapefruit with Aloe gel and blend it for two or three minutes to make Aloe citrus juice.
4. Immediately store the prepared Aloe vera juice in an air tight container and refrigerate it. The Aloe juice will be stable for a week but to take full benefits of it, consume within two days of preparation.
